Joseph M. Schmied, 80

Dateline: Port St Lucie, Florida

Joseph M. Schmied, age 80, of Port St Lucie, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 7, 2017 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA. He was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Greene) Schmied, to whom he was wed on June 29, 1963.

Born in Beltiug, Romania on August 15, 1936, he was a loving son of the late Joseph and Helen (Renz) Schmied.

Joseph spent his early years living and attending school in Romania. At the age of 14, his family moved to the United States and settled on Long Island, New York. He graduated from Sayville High School and furthered his education at the University of Missouri at Rolla, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Schmied was employed for over twenty-five years as a Civil Engineer in the bridge department for the United States Coast Guard on Governors Island, New York, and also belonged to several engineering societies.

Joe was a former forty-three year resident of Oakdale, New York. He and his wife had spent many winters in Florida and for the past four years had made Port St Lucie their permanent resident.

Mr. Schmied had deep faith in God and was truly a proud American. He was a communicant of Holy Family Parish in Port St Lucie and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Joe’s greatest pleasure in life was his family, especially the times he shared with his adoring grandchildren and treasured friends. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed attending horse racing at the Saratoga Race Track in New York.

In addition to his beloved wife of over fifty-four years, he is survived by his devoted children Joseph P. Schmied of Jensen Beach, Florida, James S. Schmied of Port St Lucie, Florida, and Jane M. Murray and her husband John of Norton, MA He was the loving grandfather of Bridgit Murray and Jack Murray. He was the dear brother of the late Lester Schmied. He was the brother-in-law of Eileen VanWeele of California, and uncle of Brian VanWeele and his wife Karen, and William VanWeele and Edward VanWeele.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Saturday, August 12th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Burial will be private.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 11th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.

In lieu of flowers, Joseph’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 220 E 42nd St., New York, NY 10017.
