Abington – Robert W. Purtle 98, a lifelong resident of Abington, died Monday August 7 after a brief period failing health. He was the beloved husband of 71 years to the late Frances N. (MacDonald) Purtle, who passed on August 3.
Born in Rockland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Beverly) Purtle and brother of the late Louise Skillings.
Robert was a proud veteran of World War II, having served overseas in the US Army from 1943-1946.
Prior to his retirement Robert had worked many years driving the largest of vehicles for the Grazianno Concrete Company.
He was a licensed pilot, and spent many enjoyable hours flying locally, out of both the Marshfield and Plymouth airports.
He is survived by his children Robert Purtle, Jr and his wife Denise of East Bridgewater, Meredith Vincent and her husband Joseph of Abington, and Susan Purtle of Abington. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Keven Phelps, Robert Purtle and his wife Alyssa and Erin Purtle, and his great grandson Conor.
He and his wife Frances will be waked and laid to rest together.
Funeral services will be held Thursday August 10 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Burial will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday August 9 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
