Obituary

Richard S. "Dick" Donovan, 88, of New Bedford died Sunday July 30, 2017 surrounded by his family at Care One in New Bedford. He was the husband of the late Barbara H. (Dowd) Donovan.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jeremiah and Nora (Norton) Donovan, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Mr. Donovan was formerly employed as a delivery driver for United Parcel Service for many years until his retirement.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School.
An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Whaling City Golf Course and had been a volunteer for the 9/18 Youth Golf Program. He loved to travel to Florida with his wife to play golf. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Local 59.
He is survived by five children, Stephen Donovan and his wife Susan of Hopkinton, James Donovan and his wife Debra of New Bedford, Kathleen Mello and Jack Whalen of Fall River, Daniel Donovan and his wife Eleanor of East Freetown, and Margaret "Peg" Donovan of Somerset; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Mello, Matthew Donovan, Kathryn Mello, Lynn Souza, Ryan Donovan, Kimberly Donovan, Nathan Donovan, and Evan Donovan; five great-grandchildren, Charlotte Donovan, Emma Souza, Ava Hatchett, Connor Donovan, and Benjamin Souza; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Jeremiah, Andrew, Michael, John, Thomas, and Francis Donovan.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Nurse Home Care, 62 Center St., Fairhaven, MA 02719 .
