Romulo Carbajal Valdez, M.D. was born in Tayug, Pangasinan, Philippine Islands on February 29, 1924 to Jose and Laureana Carbajal Valdez. He was the third child of 9 children, Guillermo, Angel, Priscilla, Esther, Raquel, Jose, Jr., Lueda, and Nehemias. He was married to Carmen Dalisay on July 3, 1948 and has been widowed since October 13, 2015. Of his siblings, only his sister, Raquel Evason Bettle of Ontario, Canada and his brother, Jose Valdez, Jr. of San Diego, CA are still living. He immigrated to the USA in 1955 and lived in Oklahoma, Colorado, New York, Canada, Vermont, California and New Hampshire with his final residence in Walnut Creek, CA. He was a WWII Veteran with the Philippine Army Guerilla troops under the direction of the U.S. Army before returning to obtain his high school diploma. He received his undergraduate degree at Philippine Union College taught school for several years then went on to Manila Central University College of Medicine. He was a physician specializing in Abdominal & General Surgery and practiced in Randolph, VT and San Diego, CA before retiring. He was a leader in the Seventh Day Adventist Church throughout his life wherever he lived, and, was a renowned officer of the Alumni Association of the Adventist University of the Philippines (formerly Philippine Union College). He is survived by his 4 children: Romelyn Dalisay Valdez Woodruff, M.A. of Bristol, RI; Nicette Valdez Balukjian of Walnut Creek, CA; Romulo Valdez, Jr., Ph.D. of Hollis, NH; Dwight Romulo Valdez, M.A., F.A.A. of Hancock, NH; 11 grandchildren: Nicole Amber Valdez Woodruff, M.S.W., Joshua H. V. Woodruff, Bradley J. Balukjian, Ph.D., Lauren A. V. Offers, Adrienne D. Dean, J.D., Romulo Dominic D. Valdez, Julian J. D. Valdez, Justin E. Valdez, Victoria E. Valdez, Logan T. Valdez and Alexa V. N. Valdez, as well as his 5 great-grandchildren (Chase Offers, Stacia Offers, Olivia Offers, Adam Valdez and Lora Valdez). He died in the air en route to Boston, MA traveling with his daughter (Nicette Balukjian) to a family reunion in Greenville, RI on July 5, 2017 around 4:30a. Services held on July 10, 2017 at the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Commons, Greenville, RI 02828 including personal homage (11:30a – 1:00p) and ceremonial tribute to his life (1:00p – 2:30p). Reception to follow at the residence of Dr. James Balukjian, 89 Coolridge Avenue, Greenville, RI 02828. One of Dr. Valdez’s last wishes was to see his memoir published. He had almost completed editing his book with the help of his nephew, Brad Balukjian, when he died.
