…former Tewksbury Council On Aging Treasurer; 87
TEWKSBURY - Mrs. Marie G. (Carpenito) (Pearson) Durgan, age 87, a well known active member of Tewksbury’s Senior community, died peacefully on Thursday, July 6 in the loving care of her family and hospice, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was the wife of the late William B. Durgan, and previously the late Louis O. Pearson.
She was born in East Boston in October 1929, one of four children of the late Anthony and Mary (Pagliarulo) Carpenito, and raised in East Boston. After moving to Tewksbury in 1959, while raising her family, she worked at Symphonics in Lowell, and later at Swan Rexall Drugs pharmacy and luncheonette in Tewksbury. She later worked as a secretary at Boston Technical High School. But her career was as a seamstress and dressmaker. She enjoyed painting and drawing, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and was a member of the Tewksbury Piecemakers Quilters Guild.
Marie was an active parishioner of St. William’s Church where she participated in several ACTS Retreats. As an active member of Tewksbury Senior’s, she worked tirelessly for the founding of Tewksbury Senior Center, served as a member for over twenty years and as Treasurer of the Tewksbury Council on Aging, and had served as a founding member and Club Secretary of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club. She was recognized by Community Teamwork Incorporated and received their Award for her service to the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
She leaves her children, Steven L. Pearson and his wife Eileen (Smith) of Sun City Center, FL, Mary Ellen and her husband Steven J. Winitzer of Tewksbury, Elaine Walsh and her husband Deacon Tom Walsh, with whom she resided in Tewksbury; a sister, Carolann Boumil and her husband James of Dracut; eight grandchildren; Lisa Kilcoyne of NH, Paul Pearson and spouse Robin Odach of NV, Kristine Severs and husband Joe of FL, Michelle Serra and husband Tomas of FL, Michael Winitzer and wife Katie of Tewksbury, Leanne Walsh of Malden, Rebecca Zale and husband Jake of Lowell, Davyn Walsh and spouse Cal Bonna of Quincy; ten great grandchildren, Hannah, Shawna, Cameron, Kaitlynne, Karoline, Gabriella, Tony, Ty, Isabell, and William; was eagerly expecting the birth of a new great granddaughter in October; and was predeceased by her beloved son, Paul Pearson; and siblings, Alfred Carpenito and Phyllis Lange.
Visiting hours Monday, July 10, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, July 11, at 10:00 a.m. in St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte. 38) Tewksbury. Please meet at church on Tuesday morning.
