John Freitas, 78, of New Bedford died July 1, 2017 at home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Maria M. "Matuca" (Andrade) Freitas.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Manuel and Laura (Lomba) Freitas, he lived in Holland before moving to New Bedford in 1977.
Mr. Freitas was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was formerly employed as a mechanic at the D.N. Kelly Shipyard in Fairhaven for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Freitas was a talented handyman who enjoyed carpentry, plumbing and fixing cars.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carmen Barbosa and her husband Domingos of Randolph; 2 brothers, Luis Freitas of Randolph and Jose Pedro Freitas of Brava, Cape Verde; a sister, Maria Freitas of Holland; a brother-in-law, John Andrade and his wife Maria of Dartmouth; a sister-in-law, Dolores Lomba and her husband Daniel of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, Jackie, Natalie and Fred; several half-brothers and half-sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will be held on Friday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
