HOLLIS- Sylvia Dianne (Plummer) Vail, 77, passed away on July 1st, 2017, and is now at peace after a difficult battle with dementia. Sylvia was born on February 21st, 1940 to Eugene and Eleanor (Gerry) Plummer. She was born and raised in Saco.
For many years, Sylvia opened her home, and heart, to foster children and others who had lost their way. She enjoyed many creative pursuits over the years-always striving to make her surroundings more beautiful. Sylvia was a social butterfly and had a quick, sometimes mischievous, sense of humor. She delighted being in the company of friends and family. She was renowned for her dancing skills-always the leader, most times the initiator, of the conga line. She was also generous with her hugs and smooches-friends, family, and sometimes even strangers benefitted from this. It is impossible to mention her big heart and sense of humor without also mentioning her feisty, tenacious, and independent nature.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, the father of her children Carl W. Smith, and her dear brothers Donald and Richard. Sylvia is lovingly remembered by her four daughters, Sheryl Halliday and her husband Jon, Nancy Mead and her husband Charles, Darlene Smith and her fiancé Kyle, Barbara Heavel and her husband Robert. Grandchildren Amanda Kimball and her husband Ezekiel, Shauna Osteen and her husband Erik, Jessica Babb, Alexander Carl Heavel, and Morgan Heavel. Great grandsons Caleb Charles William Babb, Harrison Prescott Kimball, and a precious great granddaughter is on the way.
Visitation will be held on Friday July 14 from 12 noon to 1 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1 PM at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. Burial will be private at South Buxton (Tory Hill) Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Sylvia’s compassion for those in need, please consider a donation to the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers, c/o Stephen Mayberry – Development Director, 93 Silver Street, Waterville, Maine 04901.
