CHICOPEE - George Edward "Nick" "Ed" Niquette, 90, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, June 30, 2017. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family, his wonderful caregivers and his comrades-at-arms. He was born in Holyoke on July 22, 1926, a beloved son of the late Maurice and Gladys (Bailey) Niquette. He was raised in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, later lived in Springfield and moved to Fairview in 1954. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, received the World War II Victory Medal and attained the rank of Motor Machinist Mate Third Class. He later served in the United States Navy Reserves and attained the rank of Diesel Engine Man Petty Officer Third Class. Following his military service, he worked at the Holyoke Magazine Press and later for Alico, Inc. in West Springfield and Montague. He later worked at the Holyoke Transcript and, in 1960, worked for the Wall Street Journal in Chicopee where he was employed for 35 years and retired as Special Projects Manager in 1995. Nick was a quiet man who enjoyed the simple things in life. For over 40 years, he enjoyed snow skiing and his many trips to the Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire with his beloved wife, Elaine. He was an "artist of sorts" who enjoyed oil painting and was a life member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks 1849. He was an Assistant Scout Master for many years, learned to play the banjo at the age of 50 and played with the Valley Strummers. An active outdoorsman, he loved hiking, golfing and sailing. Nick and Elaine built a home 60 years ago at the Otis Reservoir where they enjoyed many summers at the lake. Active in his Catholic faith, Nick was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, R. Elaine (LeMaire) Niquette. They were married on May 19, 1951 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville and were blessed with over 66 years of happiness together. Besides his wife, he leaves his loving daughter, Leslie Niquette of Easthampton; his two dear brothers, Robert Niquette of Bonita Springs, FL and Donald Niquette and his wife, Marilyn, of Ware; his dear sister, Evelyn Couture of Ellenton, FL; his dear brother-in-law, Raymond Hamel of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended members of the Niquette and LeMaire families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brother, Roger Niquette; and his two dear sisters, Dorothy Hamel and Helen Deshaies. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, July 7, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
