Shrewsbury: Peter J. Zona, 77, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 22, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves a son, Mark Zona and his partner Jennifer Maple of Worcester; two daughters - Amy and her husband Richard Vigdor of Grafton and Karen Bradley and her partner Jacob Rich of Shrewsbury; three grandchildren - Kay Zona, Kyle Cassano, and Griffin Bradley; two sisters, Patty Armendo and Gloria Baril and two brothers, John and Butch Zona; his dear sister-in-law Mary Ford and brother-in-law Theodor Baril; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Margaret A. (Smith) Zona in 2004.
Pete was born in Worcester, son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Powers) Zona. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Clark University and his Masters Degree from Worcester State College. He proudly served his country in the US Army. He devoted his career to education in the Shrewsbury Public Schools. Over his 37 year career he taught both 6th and 4th grade, and was principal at North Shore, Coolidge and Spring Street Schools. Additionally he was a real estate agent and worked as a security guard after his retirement from education. Peter was also a member of St. Mary's Church and a town meeting member. He most enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered as a man who was a calm port in a storm with admirable strength and determination in the face of adversity.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 26 from 4-7 pm in Nordgren Funeral Home 300 Lincoln St Worcester. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 am in St. Mary's Church 640 Main St. Shrewsbury.
