PORTLAND- Sally A. Albert, age 69, passed away on June 18, 2017.
Born June 20, 1948 at Eagle Lake, Aroostook County Maine. Growing up Sally left home at the age of 7 to attend the American School for the Deaf and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf. She went on to achieve her Bachelor and Masters Degree at Gaulledet University in Washington DC. She first work in the state of California ,teaching,before returning to Maine where she taught in Madawaska. She then continued on to teach at the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf for many years.
While teaching at The Baxter School she also worked as an evening professor at the University of Southern Maine where she taught American Sign Language 1,2 and 3. Sally was the first deaf teacher to use ITV programming in the State of Maine at the Baxter School . This was a virtual classroom program reaching out to hearing children across the State of Maine teaching them American sign language. This program enabled better communication between the Hearing and Deaf community, building bridges between the two communities. While teaching at the Baxter School Sally lived in several communities including Falmouth, Saco, South Portland and Portland.
She is survived by her son James Thomas Gatehouse and her granddaughter Victoria Ann Gatehouse. . In Lieu of flowers please donate to a local Deaf charity in Sally's name.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday July 15 at 1PM at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road, Buxton.
