WAYLAND: Louis Vachon died on June 8, 2017, days before his 85th birthday, after a long illness. Born in 1932 in Montréal, Quebec, he was the son of Irenée Vachon, airplane pilot and Aimée Vachon, a homemaker. He was bilingual (French/English) and took a medical degree at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine in 1958.
Louis would be the first to say his happiest moment came when he married his wife, Monique Blain, in 1960. Together they moved to the United States and started their young family in the Boston area in 1961. Louis and Monique Vachon together relished weekends in Wellfleet and travelling. He loved sailing, reading, and fixing things around the house. He enjoyed specialized tools and gadgets and once said if he had not allowed his 18 year old self to pick his career as a doctor, he would have probably been an engineer. He tinkered, in the inventive sense of the word, and with beautiful hands crafted many practical things for his home.
Louis Vachon worked at Boston University School of Medicine for 52 years as psychiatrist, research fellow, professor, and chair of his department. Many people responded to his mild, gentlemanly manner and insight. He worked very hard all his life up until 2014. Dr. Vachon participated professionally in the Mass Medical Society and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI) for several years.
Louis also had a vast collection of books, especially on history, could recount stem-winding stories, and had a subtle sense of humour. He possessed several kind qualities which endeared him to others.
We will remember his smile, his warmth, his love of grilled fish and blue cheese, his love of family and friends. He is survived by his wife Monique, son Philippe Vachon and daughter Dominique Vachon Winn, as well as 4 grandchildren Aimee, Georgia, Caleb, and Genevieve. He made a difference in the lives of many.
