John J. "Jack" Halloran 91, of Franklin, died peacefully at home, with family at his side, Sunday June 11, 2017, following an illness. He was the beloved husband of Judith E. (Dodge) Halloran, with whom he shared 73 years of marriage.
Born December 26, 1925, in Newton, a son of the late John J. and Margaret A. (O’Connell) Halloran, he was a former resident of Newton, Waltham, Medfield, South Yarmouth, & Simpsonville, South Carolina, before moving to Franklin 3 years ago to be closer to family.
He was raised and educated in Newton and was a graduate of the Newton Trade School as well as a former owner and operator of Kerrigan Brother’s Texaco Service Station in Newton Center for over 40 years. He was also handy at construction having built his own home in Medfield and assisted in many home improvement projects for his family and friends.
A proud American, he served in the United States Navy during WWII, attaining the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class, he was stationed aboard the USS Montauk, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 1 Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.
An avid golfer, he won numerous tournaments held at Sandy Burr, Wayland, Brookmeadow Country Club, Canton, Foxboro, and Walpole Country Club. He also enjoyed bowling, and was always willing to help someone, especially the elderly. Jack would make repairs for them and often wouldn’t take any money for his services while residing in South Yarmouth.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his 2 sons; John E. “Jay” Halloran and wife Linda of South Carolina, Kevin R. Halloran and wife Kimberly of Franklin, a sister, Margaret Finnemore, 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Claire Kling, Helen Benger, Dorothy Pouliot, Mary Halloran and George Halloran.
Funeral services with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne will be held at a later date.
