Robert A. Wood, Sr. age 87 of Canton passed away June 12th at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Norwood, he was raised in Easton and graduated from Oliver Ames High School and was a Marine Corp Veteran of the Korean War. Robert was a member of the Marine Corp League and was a Golden Gloves Boxer and won the New England Regional Championship in 1950. He went on to box professionally and had 53 fights including an exhibition fight against Rocky Marciano who he sparred with on several occasions. He also played Semi-pro Football for the Canton Town Club, Easton Huskies and Stoughton Town Football Team. He worked as a Machinist and Quality Control Inspector for Northrop Corporation for 36 years before retiring. He has lived in Canton for over 40 years and was a member of the Canton Town Club, Knights of Columbus Council 2095, and the Canton Veteran Service department Honor Guard.
Beloved husband of the late Madelyn (Cajolet). Father of Kathleen Dunn and her husband Thomas of Plymouth and Robert A. Wood, Jr. and his wife Helene of Easton. Stepfather of Richard Morash of Canton. Brother of Lawrence Wood, Francis “Butch” Wood and MaryAnne Murray all of Easton and Margaret Turpin of Taunton. Grandfather of Michelle Totman, Colleen Somich and her husband Philip, and Michael Wood. Also survived by 3 great grandchildren. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Funeral mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Thursday morning at 10:30.
