…Boston Local 33 Roofer; 84
TEWKSBURY - Mr. Jacob H. Heim, age 84, a Korean War Era veteran, died peacefully on Sunday morning, June 11, at his Tewksbury home, in the loving care of his daughter and “son.” He was the beloved husband of Mary A. (Flynn) Heim, who died in 1991.
He was born in Boston, in March 1933, one of eight children of the late Jacob H. and Charlotte M. (Hayes) Heim, and raised on Shawmut Avenue in the Mission Hill area of Boston. Upon graduation from Boston Latin High School, he enlisted into the U.S. Army, and served in the 18th Engineer’s Company in with the German Occupation Forces during the Korean War Era. He was assigned to demolition services, specializing in neutralizing unexploded ordinance and removal and destruction of landmines.
When he returned home, he joined the Boston Local 33, Waterproofers and Roofers Union, and remained a member of Local 33, long after retirement. He was proud to call himself a “Union Man,” and worked actively and tirelessly for Local 33 throughout his career and long after retirement.
Since his retirement, he became an avid golfer, and combined many Union friendships with golf, participating in weekly matches and tournaments with his old work buddies.
He was also a devout Catholic Layman, and maintained ties to the Mission Hill Church throughout his life.
He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Barbara and her husband Richard Castelli, Evelyn Decker, and Constance Heim.
He leaves his beloved daughter and her husband, his “son,” Cynthia M. and William “Bill” Fitzsimmons of Tewksbury, with whom he had resided for the past twenty-six years; his siblings, Donald and Carolyn Heim of Norton, MA, Jacqueline and Roy Richardson of Cape Cod, Carol and Edward Tierney of R.I., Ronald and Ingred Heim of So. Coast, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
