Obituary

James Carroll, 85, passed away on Friday June 2, 2017, at Avalon Health Care Center in Mystic, CT surrounded by loved ones.

James was born August 20, 1931 in Waltham, Massachusetts, the son of the late John and Esther (Dennis) Carroll and was raised in Glen Ellyn, IL.

James graduated from Marquette University where he met his wife Joan Secord. They were married on July 2, 1955 and enjoyed a long and happy life together.
James and Joan raised their family in Green Brook, NJ and spent many summers enjoying the Jersey shore.

James had a very successful career working for the telephone company and spent most of his time working in Manhattan. After a career of 30 years, he was fortunate enough to retire at the age of 55 and lived life to its fullest. He spent his retirement years in his favorite vacation spot, Madrid, Maine. While living in Maine, he loved snowmobiling, four wheeling, hunting and fishing.
James, also known as Big Jim was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Rangely (Oquossoc), Maine. Big Jim was also a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington, Connecticut when they relocated in 2007.

Big Jim is survived by his son, Kevin J. Carroll of Stonington, daughter Maureen Carroll of Piscataway, NJ and brother D. Kevin Carroll of Elmhurst, IL.

In addition to his parents, James is predeceased by his wife Joan, his son James D. Carroll and his twin brother John Carroll.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 6, at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington Borough. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, NJ will be held on Thursday, June 8, at 11:00am.

Donations in James’s memory can be made to St Mary’s Church 100 Main Street Stonington, CT 06378.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 6, at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, NJ will be held on Thursday, June 8, at 11:00am. A complete obituary will be published in Sunday's New London Day. The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic is assisting the family.
