Obituary

bington – Douglas W. Godfrey 86, of Abington, formerly of Hanson, died Monday May 29 after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Beth E. (Stone) (Anderson) Godfrey, and was predeceased by his first wife Shirley Godfrey.

Born in St. Albans, Vermont he was the son of the late Henry and Nellie (Ray) Godfrey.

Douglas proudly served in the US Navy from 1948-1952 as a member of the Admiral’s Band.

After the Navy he earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the Boston Conservatory of Music. He taught music to countless students in the Whitman-Hanson, Abington and Medfield school systems, retiring in 1993.

Music was his talent and passion. In addition to teaching, Doug performed with many musical groups and at varied venues throughout the area.

In addition to his wife Beth he is survived by his children, Stephen Godfrey of Hanson, Susan Cousens of Hanson, Shelley Jefferson of Whitman, Lawrence Godfrey of Hull and John Godfrey of Halifax. He is also survived by several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours to be held Thursday June 1 from 4:00-8:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary, Whitman. His funeral service will be held Friday June 2 at 11:00 AM in the United Church of Christ, 10 Bedford Street, Abington.
