Philip C. Powell of West Roxbury, formerly of Jamaica Plain, died peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2017. Phil was born September 19th, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of John Powell of Tipperary, Ireland and Catherine (McKinnon) Powell of Glace Bay, Canada. He graduated from Boston College in 1955 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame at Boston College. Phil is predeceased by his parents and seven siblings. He worked for a few years in Calais, France where he also played on the Calaise basketball team where they won the Northern France Championship. Phil was the Director of Central Stores for the Boston Housing Authority until his retirement. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol (Barry) Powell of 49 years and his five children, Marjorie and her husband Robert Tarte of San Francisco, John and his wife Siobhan Powell of West Roxbury, Katie Powell of Boston’s South End, Rosemary and her husband Robert Whiting of Beverly and Karen Powell of West Roxbury; as well as his sister –in- law Jeanne Barry of West Roxbury. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a loving Papa to his eight grandchildren, Jack, Ryan, Abigail, Madeline, Aidan, Connor, Bridget and Pierce. He was devoted to his family and was a loyal friend to many. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Funeral from The Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY on Thursday June 1, at 9:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Theresa of Avila Church at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
