Dartmouth – Virginia Sherman Morrison, 84, owner of Davoll’s General Store and a Southworth Library’s children’s librarian, died at home on Monday after a heroic fight with cancer.
Born in Westport, she was the daughter of Rosella A. (Mosher) and Frank M. Borden. She attended Westport schools and the Swain School of Design in New Bedford. Virginia has lived with her life long husband of 63 years in Dartmouth.
She spent twenty-five years helping the children of this town connect with books. An avid reader, a Virginia Morrison Book Collection has been established in her memory. A lifelong member of Allen’s Neck Meeting, a member of the Paskamanset Bird Club, a participant in the Women’s Club, a member of the Library Board of Trustees and a member of the Friends of the Library and Fellowship were all organizations she participated in. A familiar early morning face at Davoll’s, a member of the elite Gabbettes, a talented and creative needle worker, accomplished pianist, and a member of the Eastern Star indicate her many talents.
A lover of family, those she has left behind include her husband Wilfred, a Dartmouth daughter Beverly and her husband Joseph Glennon III; a South Berwick, Maine, daughter Lee and her husband John Shipley; along with her Colorado Springs grandson Troy and his wife Brandi Shipley. Virginia’s sister Florence and her husband Robert Lemos of Dartmouth; as well as a second sister Joyce and her husband Eric Sanderson from Florida, are all among the survivors. Four nieces and three nephews join the list of those who will miss her, along with their children.
A Celebration of Virginia’s Life will be held at the Allen’s Neck Meeting at 739 Horseneck Road in Dartmouth, Saturday, September 24th, at 1 o’clock.

Interment will follow service in Allen’s Neck Cemetery, Dartmouth.
