Obituary

Hampstead, NH – George N. Spates, Jr., 80 of Hampstead, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his side.

George was born in Lawrence, MA on January 26, 1937, the son of George N. Spates, Sr. and Louise (Hawkins) Spates. He grew up and was educated in Salem, NH; where he graduated from Woodbury High School, class of 1955. After graduation, George was a member of the Army National Guard, and became a member of the Boston Carpenters Union Local 33. Unistrut in Canton, MA also employed him for several years.
George had a passion for classic cars and was an avid fan of NASCAR racing. He enjoyed playing billiards and was a member of the VFW Post 8546 of Salem, NH. He also enjoyed camping with his family and friends, especially at Old Orchard Beach, ME.

George is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Theresa M. (Daneau) Spates of Hampstead, NH; his brother, Richard Spates and Betty Dormer of Saugus, MA; son, George N. Spates III and his wife, Mo Anne Shyne of Hampstead, NH; daughters, Susan Brain and her husband, William of Methuen, Melinda Daigle and her husband, Rodney of Derry, NH, and Sharon Morton and her husband, Brian of Salem, NH; grandchildren, Nadine Spates, G. Nelson Spates IV, Kingsley Spates, Kristin Brain, Zackary Daigle, Jordan Daigle, Eric Daigle, Alyssa Daigle, Kyle Morton, Collin Morton, and Dawson Shyne; great-granddaughter, Gabriella Spates; and many friends. He is predeceased by his brothers, Russell and Frank Spates.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for their loving care, especially Lisa, who was a tremendous help with his daily care.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate George’s life by gathering for calling hours at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen on May 10, 2017 from 4-8 PM. His Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Monica’s Church in Methuen on Thursday at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem, NH.
