New Bedford - Luis A. Coimbra, age 66 of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Maria E. (Barao) Coimbra and the son of the late Juliet (Andrade) and Jose Coimbra.
Luis was born in St. Michael, Azores. He attended Marine school in Portugal and served in the Portuguese Navy before coming to New Bedford in 1977. He worked as a Captain of several fishing vessels until he retired.
He is survived by his children, Octavio Coimbra and his wife Elizabeth; Tasha Teles and her husband Tome; grandchildren, Alexandra Amaral, Olivia Coimbra, Sephra Moniz, Nadia Coimbra, Cole Teles, Christian Teles; 3 siblings, Natalia Farras, Gualter Coimbra, and Jose Coimbra as well as several nieces and nephews. Luis was also the father of the late Sandra Coimbra.
His funeral will be Wednesday beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to take place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Acushnet Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Tuesday evening between 5:00-8:00 P.M.
