FAIRHAVEN — Hilmar H. “Gundy” Gundersen, age 89 of Fairhaven, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Our Lady’s Haven after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Lucy ( Skinner) Gundersen.
He lived in Fairhaven for many years and was the son of the late Fridolf and Jane (Daffinee) Gundersen and was born in New Bedford.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Okinawa and Cuba. Gundy was employed in banking, associated with Compass Bank, formerly N.B. Five Cents Savings Bank, retiring in 1993.
A member of Grace Episcopal Church and active in the former 20/30 club, he was also an active member of Eureka Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Disabled American Veterans - Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter No. 7.
Gundy was a town meeting member, co-chairman of the Fairhaven Tourist Committee, and was also a volunteer with the National Park Service.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons David Gundersen and his wife Nancy of Hubbardston, MA and Mark Gundersen of Fairhaven, his sister Elizabeth Monk of R.I. his grandchildren Kristofer Gundersen and his wife Alexa, Kimberly Gundersen, and Erik Gundersen and his wife Courtney, his greatgrandson Connor Gundersen. He was the grandfather of the late Erica Gundersen.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 25th, from 6-8 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County Street, New Bedford. His funeral will be on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St., New Bedford, followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery.
