Anthony P. Melchiorri, Sr., 96

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Anthony P. “Tony” Melchiorri, Sr., age 96, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Wingate at Norton. He was the loving longtime companion of Dorothy A. Coyne and the beloved husband of the late Celia B. (Fornaciari) Melchiorri.

Born in Mansfield, MA on September 19, 1920, he was a loving son of the late Peter and Matilda (Ceccarelli) Melchiorri.

A 1938 graduate of Mansfield High School, Tony was a well-known and respected Mansfield businessman and active member of the Mansfield community.

He successfully founded and operated the former Bonnie Brook’s, Central Market and IGA Supermarket in Mansfield.

Tony was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and a former member of the George C. Shields Council Knights of Columbus. He was a former member and past president of the Mansfield Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow.

Mr. Melchiorri served on the Mansfield School Committee for nine years, the Mansfield Industrial Committee for thirty-one years and as a Director of the Mansfield Bank for forty years.

Tony treasured the times spent with his adoring family; summers spent in Falmouth and will always be remembered for his charitable nature.

He is survived by his devoted children Celine B. Wills and her husband James of Mashpee, Cynthia Melchiorri of Westport, CT, Anthony P. Melchiorri, Jr. and his wife Lisa of East Falmouth and the late Nancy A. Clagg, who is survived by her husband Jack Clagg of Foxboro. He was the cherished “papa” of Pamela Wills, Gregory Wills, Laura Clagg, Joseph Clagg, Nolan Clagg, Mark Clagg and Gabriella Melchiorri, and the “grand papa” of Celia, Gavin and Logan. He was the dear brother of the late Michael Melchiorri, Annie Contanelli, Louis “Jiggs” Melchiorri and Nando Melchiorri, and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Monday, April 24th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 23rd from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
