Obituary

James A. Matthews, 75, of 48 Davidson Drive died June 2, 2002 at the Lakes Region General Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born in Lowell, Mass. on March 2, 1927, the son of Nathaniel W. and Zilpa (Sutcliffe) Matthews. He was raised in Lowell.

He served in the Navy during World War II and following the war; he was graduated summa cum laude form Bowdoin College. He entered employment with Rumford Press in Concord NH, where he met and married his wife, the former Doris Bennett

Mr. Matthews went on to a career as a management consultant. He worked for several national companies and later as a self-employed consultant. At their request, he joined the Design Institute America Company of Ohio as Chief Executive Officer until his retirement. He relocated to the Lakes Region 15 years ago.

He enjoyed classical music and poetry and attended many symphony concerts.

Family members include his wife, Doris E. (Bennett) Matthews of Laconia; two sons, Thomas Matthews and his wife Tina of Belmont and John Matthews and his wife, Anna of North Grafton MA; six daughters, Deborah (Mrs. Robert) Boucher of Biddeford ME, Roberta (Mrs. Ronald) Unger of Orange CT, Sherry (Mrs. Charles) Perry of Northampton MA, Suzanne Stiles of Laconia, Jeanne (Mrs. Ronald) Trulove of St. Louis MO, and Deborah (Mrs. Frederick) Perkins of St. Louis MO; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a sister, Althea McCue of Chelmsford MA; nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two sons, infant Timothy Matthews years ago and Jared Matthews in 1997.

Calling hours will be in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. on Thursday form 7 to 9 PM. Cremation will follow. David L. Furber and Timothy C. Molan are the funeral directors.
