Obituary

Ruby Lucille Cox Mullis Metts, 88, of Berrien County, Georgia, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, April 6, 2017, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Tracy Clements officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Metts was born March 9, 1929, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Bert Lee & Alice Myrtle Luke Cox. In addition to being a farm wife for many years, she worked as an LPN, as a clerk at C & S Drug Store, and as a seamstress at Fitzgerald Underwear, the Cotton Mill, H.R. Kaminsky & Sons, and Modern Fibers. Following the completion of her secretarial training at Ben Hill-Irwin Tech, she worked as a proof reader and receptionist for the Herald-Leader. She also served as nutrition manager at the Ben Hill County Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed working as a door greeter at Wal-Mart. Mrs. Metts loved to crochet and enjoyed crocheting baby blankets for family and church members. She was an avid gardener as well. Mrs. Metts enjoyed keeping up with her friends and family through her Facebook account. She was an active member of Callie Garbutt Baptist Church having taught Sunday school, children’s church, and played the piano. She was currently a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Ocilla.

She is survived by a son, James William Mullis, Jr. and his wife Donna Summers Mullis of Gulf Shores, Alabama; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Mullis of Concordia, Missouri; a daughter, Loretta Alligood and her husband Stan Alligood of Sylvester; two step-sons and their spouses: Bobby & Melba Metts of Enigma and Ernest & Sandra Metts of Ringgold; her grandchildren: Shelley Mullis Kennon & Brook of Kirkwood, Missouri, Becky Alligood Waltman & Chad of Poulan, Melissa Mullis Medley & D.R. of Spring Branch, Texas, Chad Alligood of Sylvester, Terri Metts Hendrix & Kasey of Tifton, Mark Metts of Enigma, and Ashley Summers of Asheville, North Carolina; great-grandchildren: Amanda Willis Lowe & Johnny, Austin Willis, Brooks Hendrix, Josh Hendrix, Jay Kennon, Jesse Kennon, Cammi Waltman, and Grant Metts; and a sister, Clara Lassiter of Sylvester. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James “Jiggy” Mullis and her second husband, Lonnie Metts.

The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers be sent to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
