Obituary

Prudence Langworthy Danforth Murphy of Groton Long Point passed away Saturday, June 1st at the age of 92.

She was born in new London on November 3, 1909 to Prudence Langworthy Danforth and the Rev. James Romeyn Danforth, minister of the First Church of Christ Congregational from 1903-1940. One of the first settlers of Groton long Point, her parents built their summer cottage in 1912 where “Prue” spent her summers until 1973 where she has lived.

Prue is a direct descendant of William Chesebrough who settled Stonington in 1649. Her great-grandfather, Capt. Franklin Hancox was a captain of Whaling ships sailing out of Stonington. Her grandfather, Samuel Chesebro Langworthy owned the farm that is now Lord’s Point.

Prue graduated from Williams Memorial Institute, now the Williams School, and from the Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA in 1931. She and the Reverend Warren Vinton Murphy were married in new London by her father on June 23, 1933.

Surviving are her children, Prudence M. Parris of new Canaan and Groton Long Point, Carol M. Parmenter of Seminole, Fla and Beckett M. Rodgers of Groton Long Point and formerly of Old Lyme. She was predeceased by her husabnd and her son, Romeyn Danforth Murphy. She also has 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Her service will be conducted at the Mystic Congregational Church on Tuesday, June 11th at 2pm. Burial will precede the service at Cedar Grove Cemetery, new London. There are no visiting hours. Donations may be made to Hospice of S.E. CT, PO box 902, Uncasville.
