Whitman – Salvatore M. Aia 87, a longtime resident of Whitman, died Thursday March 30 after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of thirty years to Mary Ellen (Franey) Aia.
Born and raised in Boston he was the son of the late Michael and Maria (Umana) Aia and a graduate of East Boston High.
He had been a proud Veteran the US Army and a life time member of the American Legion of Whitman.
Salvatore had been a talented cabinet maker, crafting beautiful cabinets and for over fifty years had been the owner and president of the Aia Corporation of Whitman. He also did machine shop work, often creating his own tools.
He along with his wife Mary Ellen had loved traveling and dining at fine restaurants, picnics, photography, antiquing, microscopes, watching “old western movies” and taking long walks.
In addition to his wife Mary Ellen he is survived by his brother Michael Aia, his sister-in-law Bette and his nephew Steven all of NY. He is also survived by his in-laws James and Joy Franey, Robert and Dorothy Franey, Richard and Mary-Jo Franey, Michael and Barbara Franey, John and Terri Franey, Joseph and Roberta Franey and John and Lee Bombardier as well as his many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Joseph, Francesco, John, Alfred and Vincent Aia and his nieces and nephews John, Paul, Dorothy, Diane and Patrick Kirby, Jonie Aia, Kathy Samourian and Al Aia, Jr.
His services will be held Tuesday April 4 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will be at a later date. Visiting hours will be held Monday April 3 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
The family requests that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice or simply perform an “act of kindness” in Sal’s memory.
