Lillian A. "Mickey" (Cooke) Alves, 92, of New Bedford passed away Monday March 27, 2017 at Sacred Heart Home after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Charles C. Alves.
Born in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia, to Harold and Amy (Cochran) Cooke, she met Charlie, the love of her life, while he was stationed in Australia during World War II. Lillian arrived in San Francisco in October 1946 and was married to Charlie in New Bedford on November 28, 1946, Thanksgiving Day.
Mrs. Alves worked at Rodney Metals where she made lifelong friends, and later at Sears, Roebuck for 21 years before retiring in 1993.
She loved her small family. She adored her grandson, Matthew, and would light up whenever she saw him. She enjoyed spending time with her dear friends. She was a lover of animals and had rescued a few cats throughout her life.
Words cannot express the gratitude that we feel towards the staff of Sacred Heart Home, especially St. Joseph's Unit, for the loving care given to Lillian. We would also like to extend thanks to the staff of Beacon Hospice, Angela, Rebecca, and Daryl, as well as the other hospice workers for their care of Lillian and her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan L. Dumont of Dartmouth; her grandson, Matthew C. Dumont of New Bedford; her brother, Robert J. Cooke of Queensland, Australia; her sister, Doris (Cooke) Hayes of New South Wales, Australia; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Charles, and her sister, Florence.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 9 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Her family will receive visitors on Thursday from 8-9 AM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to It's All About The Animals, 103 Marion Rd., Rochester, MA 02770.
