Stephen “Steve” Michael Matzdorff, 63, life-time resident of Groton, was unexpectedly called home to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, 25 March 2017.
Steve was born 1 July 1953 in New London to Gerald Eugene and Nancy Estelle Matzdorff. He grew up in Noank with his siblings Julie (McKenna), Scott, and Jon. He worked at Universal Food Store and graduated from Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in 1971.
After graduating, Steve began a life-long career with the Town of Groton’s Public Works Department. He started as a surveyor and retired as a Construction Inspector after nearly 39 years.
Outside of work, Steve was a loving and devoted husband and father. Sadly, he leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Margaret (Studwell) Matzdorff and their three children and spouses: Nathan (Carrie) and Aaron (Fallon) Matzdorff, and Leah (Sloan) Arnold. He was also a caring grandfather to Aurora and Jeshua Matzdorff and Elliotte Arnold.
Steve was known by his family and friends for his compassionate, sacrificial, and gentle nature. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
His family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, March 30, from 4 to 6pm at the Groton Bible Chapel, 66 Toll Gate Road, Groton. A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will be held on Friday at 11:00am at the Groton Bible Chapel. Burial in Noank Valley Cemetery will be private for the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Easter Seals or to the AWANA or the Gleaning Funds at Groton Bible Chapel.
