Obituary

Aaron Earl Burney, age 89, died Friday, March 24, 2017 at his home in Coffeeville, MS. He was born in Yalobusha County on January 17, 1928 to the late Earl Monroe and Frances Holloway Burney. He served in the United States Army and was a member of Gatewood Church of God of Coffeeville. Mr. Burney served thirty four years in public education. Twenty six of those years were with the Coffeeville School System. In 1965 he was promoted to the position of Principal of the Coffeeville Elementary School. Four years later he was promoted to the position of Assistant Superintendent. In 1980 Mr. Burney assumed the leadership of the local district as Superintendent where he served the remaining five years of his career. During his tenure in the school system, he served duties as a basketball and baseball coach, leading the 1965 Coffeeville baseball team to a State Championship title. After his retirement, Mr. Burney served on the Board of Trustees at Northwest Community College from 1991 until 2005. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the Seven Oaks Venue in Coffeeville, MS with Bro. Freddie Moorman, Bro. Charles Runnels and Bro. Farrell Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Burial will be in the Coffeeville City Cemetery with Daryl Burney, Jeff Burney, Jerry Burney, Keith Burney, Paul Burney and Ross Burney serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Burney is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Floyd Burney of Coffeeville, MS; two sons, Glenn Burney (Judy) of Coffeeville, MS and Barry Burney (Michelle) of Grenada, MS; one sister, Marie Burney of Tulsa, OK; and three grandchildren, Demi Burney, Jeremy Ballard and Jayla Anthony.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Dixon, Ruth Carroll and Grace Stanley; two brothers, Ray Burney and Bobby Burney.
