Ann Albern Olmsted of Winchester, MA, age 52, passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones on March 21, 2017. She had been living with breast cancer for three and a half years. Ann was born in Summit, NJ on October 25, 1964 to Robert G. and Zillah Lee Albern. She grew up in Wilmington, DE with her older sister Audrey Albern Sheffield, graduating from Mount Pleasant High School and figure skating at the Skating Club of Wilmington. Ann attended Middlebury College in Vermont where she studied Economics and Art History, solidified her love for the mountains and made lifelong friends. After graduating, Ann worked in management consulting before redirecting her career into fundraising at Harvard University, which better matched her love of higher education and working with people. She married James (Jay) Ward Olmsted in 1991 in Middlebury, VT, raising three children: Molly, Sophie, and Mason, in Winchester, MA. When she chose to focus on raising her family, Ann became involved with her community, acting as president of the Winchester Cooperative Nursery School, Lincoln School Parent-Teachers’ Association, and the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence. As her children grew more independent, she returned to fundraising with the Somerset Club in Boston, MA. Ann’s love of the outdoors found her running, biking, skiing and hiking, usually with her dog, as well as with family and friends. Her first competitive running race was a marathon, followed by four more (two Boston) and to the top of Mt Washington. She bicycled in the Pan-Mass Challenge twice, a multitude of Proutys, and hiked all of the 4000’ peaks in New Hampshire near her 2nd home in Franconia, NH. With a quick and boisterous laugh, she shared her life with the people she loved. Ann is remembered by her husband, her three children, her parents and sister, and many more. A service of remembrance and celebration will be held on April 1, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester, MA. A reception at the church will follow. Ann was treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, so in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Ann Olmsted at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or via www.dana-farber.org/gift.
