Ruby Young, 91, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, March 25, 2017, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Robert Wigley officiating. Interment will follow in the Prospect Cemetery, Ben Hill County, Georgia. The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Young was born March 18, 1926, in Coffee County, Georgia, to the late G. W. & Annie Bagley. She attended school in Broxton, and nursing school in Baltimore, Maryland. During World War II, Mrs. Young worked in Savannah at the Naval Shipyards as a welder, building ships. After marriage, she worked in the field, farming alongside her husband. She also worked for the Ben Hill County School system as a paraprofessional and a substitute teacher. Mrs. Young was very active in the Parent Teacher Association while her children were in school. She was president of the Ashton Home Demonstration Club and was named Home Demonstration Woman of the Year in 1962. Mrs. Young was an accomplished seamstress. She will also be remembered for baking wedding cakes for brides in the community as well as for three of her children. Mrs. Young was an active member of Prospect Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, enjoyed singing in the choir and with different groups such as the MissionAires that sang in different churches during revivals.
She is survived by her children: Linda & Wayne Evans of Fitzgerald, Kenny & Nancy Young of Fitzgerald and Connie & Derrell Hampton of Chula; six grandchildren: Alan Roberts, Cindy & Brian Dennard, and Jody Young, all of Fitzgerald, Jason & Suzanna Young of Brunswick, Justin & Bonni Young of Adel, and Gail Dorminy of Fitzgerald; 13 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law: Ruth Weeks of Fitzgerald, Mary Bagley of Nichols, and Jo Bagley of Atlanta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Ezra Young, Sr.; a son, John E. “Johnny” Young, Jr.; a grandson, Jerry Roberts; and her ten siblings.
