Our Dad, Steve Godbout, passed away during the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 21, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He leaves behind a loving family: his three kids, Marc and his wife Cindy, Judy, and Mike and his wife Ana, his sister, Irene, grandkids Chris, Nick, Philip, and Tony, great grandson, Johnny, and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Dad was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years (and our Mom), Rita, brothers Albert, Maurice, Roger, and Gerald, and sister, Rita.
Dad was always a hard worker. He spent most of his working years, from his teens into his 40's, at First National Stores. During that time, he took a break to join the Air Force during the Korean war, where he worked as a clerk. He said that one of the things he didn't like about his stint in USAF (besides Spam) was writing condolence letters to families back home. After First National folded, he worked at Armtec until retiring.
For his final years, Dad moved into Courville Communities. We would like to thank the wonderful, compassionate, people at Courville for taking such great care of our Dad. And we are also grateful to the people at Compassionate Care Hospice, for helping him (and us) through his last days.
He was a communicant of Ste. Marie's Church for most his life. Gifted with a wonderful singing voice, he sang in the church choir for many of those years.
Dad loved the outdoors. Fishing was probably his favorite thing, but also hunting, taking his boys often. We never got anything hunting, but it was still a great time, taking off in the early morning and getting away from the city. His other passion was gardening. We always had fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, corn and other veggies during the summer. And the front of the house was well decorated with colorful flowers.
Our best memories, though, are the times spent with him and the rest of the family. Family dinners. Watching hockey or football (and even pro wrestling :-)). He taught his boys how to swing a hammer and swing a bat. He taught his favorite daughter how to dance the Box Step and how to drive a car. He would often just start singing when the mood hit. He wasn't much of a talker, but he was always there for us. He was one of the good ones; a Dad, and a person, that you could count on. We were blessed to have him in our lives, and we miss him already.
