Joseph R. Gomes, 89 of New Bedford died March 12, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio J. and Josephine (Almeida) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Gomes served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and later was employed with the Department of Employment Training for 20 years until his retirement.
He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and he attended Bridgewater State College Graduate School of Counseling.
Mr. Gomes was a dedicated family man and a life member of the N.A.A.C.P.
Survivors include his brother, Albert "Abbie" Gomes of The Villages, FL; a sister, Mary Gibau of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Luiza Gomes, John Gomes, Anita Stewart, Antone Gome, Emidio Gomes and James Gomes.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 24th at 11:30 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. His family will receive guests on Friday morning from 10:30 - 11:30 AM prior to his service. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
