George C. Schmidt, age 91, passed away at Wingate in South Hadley on Mar. 14, 2017. George was born on Nov. 10, 1925 in Springfield to the late Fritz and Margaret (Kitz) Schmidt. He was a communicant of St Rose de Lima in Chicopee. He was a graduate of Tech High in 1942 and went on to join the Navy serving aboard a destroyer escort during WWII and Korea. George was an avid bowler, red sox fan and enjoyed traveling. He retired after 41 years from the former Monsanto as a security guard. George was predeceased by his wife Lucille (Rivet) Schmidt who passed away in 2011. He leaves one son, Donald Schmidt and his wife Linda of Hampden; two daughters, Linda Conner and her husband Robert of Chicopee and Karen Rys of Sugarland, TX, also eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. The family would like a special thanks to the staff of the East 2 Nursing wing at Wingate for the care given to George. A Funeral Service will be held on Thurs, Mar. 23, 2017 at 9:30 AM from the Grise Funeral Home 280 Springfield St. followed by a funeral home service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private at the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thurs, Mar. 23, 2017 from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM.
