Obituary

Dorothy E. "Dotty" (O'Brien) Carroll, a longtime resident of Charlestown and formerly of South Boston, entered into eternal life on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She was 92 years of age.

Dotty was born in Boston on January 14, 1925, a daughter of the late James P. O'Brien and Sarah R. (Brockelbank) O'Brien. She grew up in South Boston where she was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from South Boston High School in 1942. Dotty enlisted into the United States Coast Guard on May 2, 1945 and served with honor during World War II. She was discharged on June 21, 1946 with the rank of Seaman, First-Class. Dotty worked for the U.S. Government in the Office of Personal Management until her retirement after 35 years. Following her retirement, Dotty worked for the Armed Services YMCA in Charlestown's Navy Yard Location for 20 years. Dotty was an active parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Charlestown for more than 65 years. She was a resident of the Zelma Lacey House where she was involved in many activities.

Dotty is the beloved wife of the late Francis P. Carroll. She is the devoted mother of Kevin Carroll and his wife Louise of Northborough, and Karen Gaylord and her husband Bill of Dorchester. She is the loving grandmother of Elizabeth Olsson and Kathleen Voda of CA, Laura Resch of OH, Amy, Allison, and Emily Gaylord of Dorchester. She is the loving great-grandmother of Kelly Francis.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dotty's Funeral on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Her burial at the V.A. National Cemetery in Bourne will be private. Her visiting hours will be on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation in Dotty's name to the St. Mary's Church Building Fund, 46 Winthrop St. Charlestown, MA 02129.

Dotty's family would like to thank the residents and staff of the Zelma Lacey House for the care and kindness that they gave to Dotty.
