Obituary

Stanley Warren Durland, of Arlington, passed away on March 7, 2017. He was born in Malden, Washington, on June 18, 1924, into a boisterous and talented family (five brothers, two sisters). In WWII he served in Kassel, Germany, where he met and married his lifelong love, Tatiana Durland. They were soon blessed with their first child, Jana. Returning to Oregon after the war, he enrolled in college and had two more children, Ted and Laura. He graduated from Reed College and landed his first job as an investigative reporter for the Oregon Journal. He won the award for Best News Story in 1956, and again in 1957, for his coverage of the Danny Schmitt story. His career then zigzagged through a number of stints in Public Relations and Technical Writing first for Lockheed, then on the East Coast for Dunn Engineering, LFE, Raytheon, where he won the Bellringer Award, and ended as a Senior Programmer at Honeywell. He had a formidable mind and an intellect that ranged from history and international politics through poetry and theology. He was never happier than when playing chess or solving obscure mathematical problems. He had an impish sense of humor, preferring convoluted stories (the longer the better) ending in a punchline of bad puns. He was a consummate musician, a scholar and writer and the author of two books. He is survived by his wife, his three children, four grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers who are devastated by his loss. A devout Christian, he was a member of Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Visiting Hours will be held at the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Sunday, March 12, from 12-3PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church, 34 Dix St. (corner of Dix and Church St.), Winchester, on Sunday at 4PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial is private.
