Obituary

John David Curtis, II, 68, entered rest Saturday, March 4, 2017.

A celebration of John’s life will be held Friday, March 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Platt’s Belair Rd. Chapel with Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating.

A native of Augusta, GA, John was a graduate of Richmond Academy and attended Brewton-Parker College. After his service in the Marine Reserve, he continued to live in Augusta and owned the first water bed shop in the area.

With a passion for music and a skill for promoting musical talent, John teamed up with Michael Leonard, a local friend to bring numerous new upcoming rock and roll groups to the CSRA in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some of these were such groups as Rory Gallagher, Argent, Ted Nugent, and Bad Company who went on to became successful entertainers. Always opened to discovering new gifted musicians, John hooked up with Steve Morse, a skilled guitarist to create the rock band, The Dixie Dregs. Their accomplishments with many records and tours put them among the elite in the rock and roll world. Signing on with Capricorn Records opened new doors for John and the Dregs. As a talent scout he went on to work with such bands such as the Steve Morse Band, 311, Widespread Panic, and the Freddy Jones Band. He considered his career in promoting musical talent as his most successful.

John had a love for the coastal life and made Hilton Head his home. After many notable achievements in the music industry, John took on a new endeavor in real estate development working with as David Roberts and The Sanddollar Building and Remodeling. In the early 2000s, new real estate investing and development ventures led John to Cashiers, NC.

John is survived by his brother, Michael Curtis (Arlene), and two sisters, Kitty Curtis and Corinne Curtis, all of Augusta, four nephews, Will Anderson (Heidi) of Ft. Wayne, IN, Travis Cook (Stacey) of Augusta, Joshua Curtis (Shawnna) of Evans, GA, Daniel Curtis (Lindsey) of Thomson, GA and two nieces, Lisa Anderson Grolemund (Patrick) of League City, TX and Shannon Cook of North Augusta, SC and several great nieces and nephews.
