Janina S. (Smietana) Bryden, 88, of New Bedford died February 27, 2017 peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Norman M. Bryden.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Stanislaw and Francesca (Wojtal) Smietana, she raised her family in Needham before returning to New Bedford in 2000.
Mrs. Bryden was formerly employed as a fashion writer for the Standard-Times and later was employed by the Publicity Club of Boston for many years until her retirement.
Survivors include her 5 children, Barry Bryden and his wife Heidi of Milford, NH, Kristine Gagne of Sharon, Norman M. Bryden III of Needham, Francesca Trevisani and her husband Robert of Wellesley Hills, MA and Elizabeth Bryden and her partner Cheryl Desmond of Manchester, CT; a brother, Thaddeus Smietana of Attleboro; 3 sisters, Emilia Foy of Attleboro, Josephine Delano and Wanda Francis, both of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Glenn Bryden, grandmother of the late Jason Gagne, sister of the late Sophie Smietana and Dr. Walter Smietana, and aunt of the late Paul Smietana.
