Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Harbin, age 79, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday, February 25, 2017. He was surrounded by family, and his wife held his hand. He was born December 24, 1937 to the late Evelyn and Henry Harbin. Chuck was a member of the Kentucky National Guard until he transitioned into active duty with the United States Army. He was a proud Army Veteran, having served his country in the Vietnam War. He had many other military assignments in the U.S. until his retirement. After his Army career, Chuck was employed, and retired from Reynolds Metal Company. He also worked as a real estate agent, providing assistance to many home buyers. Chuck was a wonderful person, who never met a stranger, always helping those in need. He was a man of many passions; one of his most outstanding was prison ministry. He served as a Volunteer Chaplain, witnessing to many in prison throughout Kentucky, and all over the world. He had a special fondness for the young inmates at JCYC. His love for the Lord also led him to serve many churches in the Louisville area. Along with his family, he attended Mosaic Methodist Church. Chuck loved his God, his family, and his country. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 54 years, Margaret (Sawyers); daughter, Jayne Harbin (Will) Pettit; son, Eric (Kris) Harbin; beloved grandchildren, Sophia Harbin and Charles Pettit; sister, Sue Grey; and brother, Robert Harbin. He will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Cook. The family would like to thank the staff of the U of L Stroke Center, and Hosparus, for all of their loving care and support during his brief illness. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3, 2017, 11 a.m. at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway; burial will follow at the Kentucky Veteran Cemetery, Radcliff, KY. Visitation is Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Because Chuck lived to serve others, we request that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to either Wounded Warrior Project (P. O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66677) or Volunteers of America Family Programs (570 S. 4th Street, Louisville, KY 40202).
