Sara Eugenia “Jennie” Adams Gay, 89, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Pruitt Health in Ocilla, Georgia.
Graveside services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Eureka Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, in Irwin County, with the Rev. Rex Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Gay was born August 17, 1927, in Turner County, Georgia, to the late Alva Jackson & Mary Ann Shivers Adams. She lived in Turner County and Irwin County all of her life. Mrs. Gay enjoyed gardening, chickens, cooking and especially traveling with her sisters. Mrs. Gay’s first job outside of the home was at age 62, with the Georgia Agrirama, and she retired 20 years later at age 82. She was well known for her biscuits that she baked at the Georgia Agrirama. Mrs. Gay was a member of Eureka Primitive Baptist Church, and at the time of her death, she was the oldest living member.
She is survived by her two sons: Carl Gay & wife, Dixie Jean and Russell Gay & wife, Roxane, all of Chula; grandchildren: Michael Gay, Amelia G. Edwards, Lance Gay, Shannon G. Baldree and Cody Gay; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hugh Wilcox Gay; a son, Allen Gay; three sisters: Jane Biggers, Eloise Fowler Roney and Gertrude Musslewhite; three brothers: David Adams, Harry Adams and Johnny Adams and a grandson, Kevin Gay.
