NATICK: Marjorie J. “Midge” “Marge” (Carter) Hastings, 85, died comfortably surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 13, 2017 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham following a period of declining health.
She was born in Framingham on May 2, 1931 the daughter of the late Frederick W. Carter and Emma A. (Stimpson) Carter.
Marge was the beloved wife for 33 years of the late Donald L. Hastings, Sr. who died on May 18, 1985.
She is survived by her loving children Donald L. Hastings, Jr. and his wife Connie of Fresno. CA; Frederick L. Hastings of Natick; Deborah J. Hastings of Natick; Thomas C. Hastings and his companion Bonnie Biederman of Stoughton; Susan H. Anderson and her husband Thomas of Bedford, NH; Scott W. Hastings and his wife Linda of Plainville and Jeffrey L. Hastings and his wife Lisa of Shrewsbury. Devoted grandmother of Jonathan; Shyla; Richard; Carter; Cameron; Alyssa; Zachary; Kaitlyn; Ryan and Hunter. Also survived by 8 cherished great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her daughter-in-law Lisa E. Hastings of Shrewsbury. She was the sister of the late Edith Wilson; William E. Carter; Burton A. Carter and Lt. J.G. Clifford S. Carter who was killed in action during World War II on the Bunker Hill. Her family was extremely proud of his heroism and being a Gold Star Family.
Marge has been a resident of Natick for over 63 years and spent her formative years in Framingham. She graduated from Framingham High School with the Class of 1948 and has remained an active member of the Alumni. She was the first woman in her family to attend college and graduated from Wheaton College with a BA in Government. Marge continued her support and remained active with the Alumni Association at Wheaton College and was looking forward to the 65th reunion of her graduation this year. After graduation, she was associated with Harvard Medical School Library as a Librarian. She retired in 2002 after 24 years of dedicated service as the Senior Operations Administrator at SunLife Insurance Company in Wellesley.
Marge was a longtime and cherished member of Community United Methodist Church in Cochituate and served on many committees. She was a Past President of the Lion’s Club of Natick, served as a Past Treasurer of the Friends of the Natick Senior Center. She loved her time spent with friends at the Natick Senior Center and playing chair volleyball. She was also a participant of TOPS of Wayland and always supported and had a kind word for everyone who knew her.
She was devoted to her family, loved to travel especially to Stowe, VT and summers spent in Wells, ME making wonderful family memories.
Visitations will be held on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
Family and friends are invited to her funeral services on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Community United Methodist Church, 5 Damon Street (corner of Damon St and Rte 27), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
Interment will follow in the Hastings family lot in Glenwood Cemetery, 25 Glenwood Street, South Natick.
