Mary Ellen Smith Hulett, 86, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Minister Teressa McDuffie and the Rev. Sammy Smith officiating. Eulogies will be given by her son, Kenneth Hulett as well as Brenda Lundy-Lewis. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Hulett was born December 24, 1930, in Abbeville, Georgia, to the late Neal & Lula Davis Smith. She graded peanuts at Union Cotton Oil Company and was a homemaker. She was a devoted farm wife, working alongside her husband growing cotton and tobacco. She worked as a caregiver and had a natural green thumb, enjoying her garden growing flowers and vegetables. She spent many hours canning and storing her crops. Mrs. Hulett was a loving mother and grandmother and will be remembered as a caring “Nanny Goat” and “Grammy” to her great-grandchildren. She attended Callie Garbutt Baptist Church and the former Northside Baptist Church.
She is survived by her two children, Deborah Ann Hulett of Fitzgerald and Kenneth Edward & Kimberly Hulett of Fitzgerald; three granddaughters: Cyndi Hulett-Hunt and husband Larry Hunt of Jacksonville, Florida, Katrina Hulett of Wilcox County, and Kayla Hulett & Jatory Lundy of Fitzgerald; great-grandchildren: Savannah Hernandez, Jaidyn Lundy, and Ashley Nicole Tucker; and a sister, Louise & Walter Jenkins of Fitzgerald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ward “Sonny Boy” Hulett; a teenage sister, Mable Smith; and two brothers, James W. Smith and Wilbur Neal Smith.
