Roscoe C. Smith, Jr., 82, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, February 9, 2017, in Hazlehurst, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Prospect Baptist Church in Ben Hill County, with the Rev. Harris Johnson and the Rev. Danny Gay officiating. Interment will follow in the Prospect Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6 PM to 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Smith was born May 4, 1934, in Pearson, Georgia, to the late Roscoe C. & Emma Stone Smith. He graduated from Atkinson County High School and served his country honorably in the United States Army. Mr. Smith retired after 42 years of service with CSX as a conductor. He was a member of United Transportation Union and a well-known farmer. He was a very active member of Prospect Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and treasurer.
He is survived by his son, David Smith of Douglas; grandchildren: Cassey & Andrew Hattaway of Pridgen, Wesley Smith & Dawn Sparks of Douglas, Cody Smith & Shana of Douglas and Cameron James Smith of Douglas and their mother, Brenda Smith of Douglas; great-grandchildren: Kaylee Gilliard, Keff Handley, Adalea Hattaway, Jaidyn Smith, Damaris Smith, Braleigh Smith, Gracelyn Smith and Lailyn Smith and one great-grandchild on the way; siblings: W. M. & Betty Ann Smith of Pearson, Louise & Auburn Harrell of Lakeland, Florida, L.G. & Betty Smith and Robert & Ellen Smith, all of Pearson and Joseph & Donna Smith of Atlanta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Ann Weeks Smith.
