Charles M. Altieri, age 86, of Brockton died Monday February 6, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was the devoted husband of Eileen (Tutty) Altieri for 58 years. Charlie was born in Brockton, son of the late Charles and Eleanor (Reino) Altieri and remained a lifelong resident of the city.
Following graduation from Brockton High School in 1948, Charlie entered the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He served as a sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers.
He was the founder and president of Charles Altieri Inc., a masonry firm in Brockton and the founder, president and CEO of Auburn Construction in Whitman. He was very proud of the success of his companies and the multitude of projects he has built in the greater Brockton area, Boston, and on Cape Cod, including Christ the King Church in Mashpee, over the last 60 years.
Charlie had a long relationship with Stonehill College. He was an apprentice bricklayer under his father’s guidance, working on one of his first projects at Stonehill College during its opening year, 1948. Charlie’s list of projects on the college campus is impressive: St. Mary’s Chapel, Stanger Hall, the Sports Complex, W.B. Mason Stadium, residence halls as well as countless renovations. He was also a member of the Executive Committee for the Development of Stonehill and in 2011 received the prestigious President’s Award for Excellence for his contributions to the building of Stonehill College.
Charlie devoted his free time to giving back to his community by being a member of many local organizations including director of Covenant Health Systems, past president of the Rotary Club, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Mass., past director of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce, member of the Knights of Columbus Seville Council in Brockton and past president of the Mason Contractors Association of Mass. He served on the board of trustees for St. Joseph Manor and was a board member of Massasoit Community College Foundation.
He will be remembered as a loving and charitable man who was a friend to everyone. Most importantly, Charlie enjoyed time with friends and family and was proud of his grandsons’ achievements.
Charlie was the father of Charles M. Altieri, Jr. of Hyannis; Mary T. Nardone and her husband John of Fairfield, CT and the late John F. Altieri. He leaves four grandsons: John, Jr., Nicholas, Samuel and Alec Nardone and was the brother of Dolores Kelliher of Norwood, Sandra Dion of Whitman and the late Marie, Michael and Henry Altieri. He was the lifelong best friend of Barney Boyajian of Brockton.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (rte. 123) Brockton on Friday 4-7pm. A procession will gather at the funeral home on Saturday at 8 am for a funeral Mass in the Chapel of Mary at Stonehill College at 9 am. Burial in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
