After a long illness at home, Michael R. Merola, 89, of Sprague Street, Greenville, Spent his final days at the Hebert Nursing Home in Smithfield where he passed away Saturday, February 4th. He was the husband of Ruth (Hennessey) Merola. They had been married for 50 years.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Angelo and Carmela (DeVito) Merola. He was a US Army veteran and Rhode Island Air National Guard. He had been a Truck Driver with the former B & E Transportation before retiring.
He was a member of the Smithfield Elks, BPOE 2359, a member of the North Providence VFW and Teamsters Local 251. He was an avid golfer and loved following the Boston Red Sox.
Besides his wife he leaves his children, Christina Merola of Littleton, CO, Donna Pavao of Ft. Myers, FL and Jack Hawkins of Cranston. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Michael R. Merola, II.
A Celebration of his life will be held Friday, February 10th from 12pm to 2pm in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Burial will be private. Military Honors will be bestowed at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to The American Cancer Society.
