Peter Anthony Gilbert Sr. passed away at his home in Pawcatuck, CT with his beloved companion of many years Diana Shugrue at his side on Thursday, February 2, 2017.
Peter was the son of the late George Edward and Margaret Roberts Gilbert. In 1962, he married Sigrid Wassum. Together they had one child, Peter Jr. Although they divorced they remained friends.
Peter graduated from Colby College in Maine, with a BA and then immediately moved to Boston where he earned an MBA in International Finance at Boston University.
Peter moved to California where he started his professional career with Kaisers International. He quickly moved up the corporate ladder and joined Wells Fargo in San Francisco. Peter had an incredible talent for finance. This was especially branded during his tenure at TIAA Cref where he managed a multi-billion dollar portfolio.
Peter was a very intelligent and talented man who had several interests. As a young boy he was a gifted equestrian and hunter. He had an extreme love of reading and was an expert on WWII. From skilled white water rafter, wine producer, bee keeper to Alpaca farmer, one could say Peter had a robust personality. He truly enjoyed to cook and loved replicating recipes from his extensive travel destinations. However, if you had to choice his favorite pastime, it was sailing. He grew up in Norwell MA and belonged to the Situate Yacht Club. His passion for the sea was regarded by his son Peter and his immediate family.
He is survived by his son Peter Jr. and daughter-in-law Stephanie, and his only grandchild, Sophia. Diana Shugrue lived with Peter and was his genuine friend. His 3 furry four legged pals will miss him too.
Words cannot express the depth of gratitude to all of those at Hospice of SE CT (Chris, Matt and the team), for their care and compassion in attending to Peter, and for making it possible for him to spend his concluding days in the home he loved so very much.
A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held this spring. Details of the memorial will be provided to friends over the coming weeks.
