Lorraine (Ayrton) Winters, 97, of Lawrence, passed away with family and staff members at her side, on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at the Mary Immaculate Nursing Center in Lawrence, MA.
Daughter of deceased parents, Matthew and Annie (Fielding) Ayrton, Lorraine was born in Lawrence on May 16, 1919, was educated in Lawrence and a graduate of Lawrence High School. In her younger years Lorraine worked at the Ayer Mill as a mender and office bookkeeper. She then went to work for Western Electric and retired from the Company following 26 years of service. Lorraine was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Prior to its closing, Lorraine was a member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Lawrence. Lorraine was a beautiful singer and a member of the choir and performed operatic plays. She was also a soloist at many weddings and funerals. While playing the piano or organ she loved leading sing-a-longs at our many family events.
Lorraine shared 47 years of marriage with her husband Joseph Winters, a former Lawrence Police Captain, who passed in 1989. Lorraine and Joe spent many wonderful years together traveling to Europe and various places within the United States and spent many winters in Florida. Together they enjoyed many years of membership at the Andover Country Club where they golfed almost every day. Lorraine kept her membership at ACC until she was in her late 80’s. In Lorraine’s later years and up into her early 90’s, she was an active member of the Lawrence Senior Center where she enjoyed line dancing and exercising. She and her friends also loved the many day and overnight trips they took with friends from St. Theresa Parish in Methuen.
Lorraine is survived by her first cousin Mary (Moore) Halbach of Fort Myers, FL. She also leaves her second cousins, who were her life providers and guardians during her later years, Nancy Moore and Thomas Corrigan and Susan Moore, all of Lawrence MA. Lorraine is also survived by many second third cousins.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff on 3A at Mary Immaculate Nursing Center for all they’ve done to care for Lorraine.
