Allan Holmes Vaitses, 88, of Mattapoisett died August 29, 2005 peacefully at home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Mable W. (Wakeman) Vaitses.
Born in Melrose, MA, the son of the late Paul and Hazel (Holmes) Vaitses, he lived in Mattapoisett most of his life.
Mr. Vaitses was a member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church.
For many years, he was the owner and operator of Vaitses Associates, Inc., building and repairing boats. In later years, he surveyed many hulls including those given to the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol, RI.
He was a trustee of the Landing Boatbuilding School in Maine.
During World War II, he served in the US Army.
Mr. Vaitses was the author of numerous books and articles on surveying, repairing and building boats.
He enjoyed gardening, sailing and writing poetry.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen P. Vaitses of Clinton, CT; a daughter, Gail V. Elen of Mattapoisett; 5 grandchildren, Stephen E. Vaitses and Peter M. Elen, both of Mattapoisett, Allayne Boruch of Portsmouth, RI, Allan H. Vaitses of Marion and Meagan Vaitses of Clinton, CT; 7 great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Donald Vaitses and Paul S. Vaitses, Jr.
His Funeral Service will be private.
