George A. Ahmed, 86, of Salem, passed away peacefully Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Florence L. (Ouellette) Ahmed with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Yapoot and Olive (Lamonde) Ahmed. He was a graduate of Salem High School Class of ’49. During the Korean War, he served with the Army stateside at several Nike Missile installations. Shortly after his tour of duty, he returned to Salem and founded The Ahmed Insurance Agency located on North Street in Salem. George and Florence married in 1960 and in addition to family and business commitments, he still found time be involved several civic and political organizations.
He was City Counselor for Ward I, and member of the Salem Historic Commission, the Board of Appeals and the Conservation Commission. He was a licensed Insurance Broker, Realtor and Certified Real Estate Appraiser as well as Building Contractor. He was a past president of the Greater Board of Realtors, Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Appraisers, former President of the Kiwanis Club, former board member of the American Red Cross. But of all his licenses, George was most proud of his Private Pilot License. He flew small planes and helicopters out of Beverly Airport and loved every moment in the air.
In addition to his loving wife Florence, he is survived by their four children, Pamela Ahmed Boucher of Salem, Diane Ahmed and her husband Joseph Young of Lynn, Stephen Ahmed and his wife Kimberly of Salem and Gregory Ahmed and his wife Lisa of Danvers. He also leaves six grandchildren, Alyssa & Jennifer Carro, Andrew Boucher, Rebecca Ahmed, Ethan & Elizabeth Mclean as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister, Frank Ahmed and Olive Ayers.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem. Visiting hours will be at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Route 114 / 1-A] Salem on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Burial will be private.
