Obituary

Spencer M. Johnson, age 89, of Mystic passed away at home on January 30. He was born May 18, 1927 in Tillsonburg, Ontario to James and Marjorie Johnson. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Toronto in 1952. On July 21, 1954, he was married to Janice Sitzman, a marriage that lasted 62 loving years.

Spencer worked as an architect in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts and was a member of the American Institute of Architects. His notable projects include athletic facilities at many colleges and universities. He also worked with Jan at remodeling modest buildings to create beautiful homes for their family. Spencer and Jan and their sons lived in Stamford until 1978, when they moved to Andover, MA. They came to Mystic in 2000.

Spencer was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist churches in Stamford and Andover, and most recently at the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church where he was instrumental in designing and creating the church’s Peace Garden. He volunteered at Mystic Seaport for many years. He was also an avid gardener and provided friends and family with seedlings and delicious fresh produce.

Spencer is survived by his wife Jan, his sister Louise Feigin, his sons Eric and David, daughters-in-law Rita and Bonnie, and his grandchildren Kathleen, Nicholas, and Rebecca.

A Memorial Service will be held at the All Souls UU Church, 19 Jay Street, New London on Saturday, February 4, at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.
